Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles, (sometimes in conjunction with electrical stimulus), on the body's surface, in order to influence physiological functioning of the body. The practise of Acupuncture dates back to Ancient China. The Chinese theorised that the body had an energy force running through it. This energy is more commonly called Qi (pronounced CHI). Qi encompasses all mental, physical, emotional & spiritual aspects of life. A persons general health is influenced by the flow of Qi in one's body aswell as the balance of Yin & Yang. If the flow of Qi is interrupted the balance between Yin & Yang is offset which will result in illness.
Qi flows along the body through meridians (or "channels"), meridians along the front of the body are identical to the back of the body. There are 14 main meridians running vertically through the surface of the body. Acupuncture points are specific areas where the meridians come to the surface of the skin, and are thus easily accessible through "needling". As energy flows through these meridians, it is believed that Qi might become obstructed, deficient or excessive, acupuncture is then used to restore the natural flow of energy thereby "unblocking" the flow of Qi and restoring the balance between Yin & Yang in the body.
