Soulstice Day Spa The newly-opened Soulstice Day Spa, inside the Silverstar Casino in Krugersdorp, is a magnificent surprise after you enter the building. Built into the side of the Krugersdorp hills, it is filled with sun and the light reflecting off water. The entrance has the oval-shaped, outdoor swimming pool, shared only by the handful of exclusive guests from the boutique hotel next-door.

The spa overlooks the awesome ‘Fountain Spectacular,’ the largest water feature in the Southern Hemisphere and the second largest in the world. While I was there, the fountains sprang into a musically synchronised display to the James Bond themes – I believe at night it is even more stunning.

It is part of the Spas of Distinction Collection and the attention to detail probably makes it the jewel of the collection. It has two levels of treatment rooms and is very sought-after at this time of year as the ultimate office ‘party’ – a far healthier and better way to treat staff. The couple’s room is also very popular as a revitalising way to improve relationships – it was occupied when I was there, so I only got a glimpse of the luxury suite. It has an indoor spa bath that overlooks the private courtyard equipped with two sun loungers, outdoor shower and cosy outdoor fireplace.

Soulstice Day SpaThere are 15 beautifully contemporary decorated treatment rooms – each room has a plasma screen on which a soothing video clip of tropical fish, butterflies or a fireplace can play. The overhead lighting colour can be selected to match the client’s needs - I went for the butterflies and a purple light. This combined with the relaxing choice in music made me feel as if I had wandered off into the country for hours.

I went for the Sulis Relax Ritual, named after Sulis the ancient Sun Goddess of wellness. This is a signature treatment using the nourishing goodness of ingredients such as cocoa butter, shea butter and beeswax. It started with an exfoliating hot sugar body scrub and then I spent 90 minutes of delight as my therapist used a range of massage techniques from around the world.

I followed this up with the Soothing Thai Foot Treatment for 30 minutes – this is a salt exfoliation and Thai-style soothing foot massage, which uses the spa’s Sulis Move Range that includes ingredients such as spearmint, aloe ferox and tea tree to soften soothe, relax and revitalise the feet and lower legs.

Soulstice Day SpaI was tempted by the indoor heated jet spa pool with its huge hydrotherapy jets and the reclining heated mosaic water loungers but settled for having lunch on the private terrace overlooking the outdoor spa pool and rock gardens, as the beautiful indoor lounge was occupied by a very relaxed company party of de-stressed ladies reaping the benefits of other treatments.

The spa offers some rather unusual treatments including Turkish designed Rasul chamber with amethysts in the wall to promote healing – I understand that this chamber holds five people and, once covered in mineral clay, participants steam away until washed clean by rain jets from the roof – sounds heavenly. The other is the flotation bath where you can hide from the world in a tranquil dusky light and revitalise your soul.

Soulstice Day SpaI found the service, care and treatment exceptional and only wish the spa was a little closer to home – it is however ideal for those living in the West Rand or northern suburbs and well worth the drive.

The casino is at the end of the N14 (Krugersdorp) highway, as the road begin to climb the Krugersdorp hills – the casino is well signposted and can’t be missed. On entering the casino (you have to pay R10 parking fee), turn right and drive to the top of the building, the spa is on the side of the hill.

There is a special on the Sulis Relax Ritual for December and I recommend that you get your share of heavenly relaxation.
