Review by Joanne Hayes
Driving up to 'the Spa' on Fairway Drive in Durban North, one could easily think you might be in the wrong place...it looks more like a building site rather than a tranquil Spa venue ... But once inside, 'the Spa' emerges. What was once a rather grand house overlooking the sea is now a lovely spa venue with amazing views from every treatment room.
First off, I have to say that it is the therapists at 'the Spa' that make the experience really special. Each of the three treatments I had, introduced me to a different therapist, who each in turn displayed outstanding technique & manner. The balance was just right.
I started off my half day package with a sauna, and then while waiting for my next treatment, had a quick manicure...it's always soooo much nicer when somebody else does your nails!
The Hot Stone Therapy back massage which followed has converted me for life! As a first-timer, with a limited knowlege of what the treatment involved, I was excited at the prospect of trying something new! Well, what an experience it was...The combination of the comforting warm stone & the deep massage (in the hands of an obviously experienced therapist!) made for one of the most satisfying massages I have ever had and left me floating on air. I encourage everybody to try it once...it will not be the last time!
To end the day I had another 'first', this time in the form of a Thai 'Wat Po' massage. What's that you ask? I did too...but once again, the experience of it is what impressed me most.
As I suffer with constant back pain as a result of old sports injuries, I was really interested in this massage as it promised to "stretch muscles & limbs in a low impact way." Being a proponent of the gentler forms of exercise such as Pilates, Yoga & the like, I was pleasantly surprised at quite how good I felt after this massage, since it was more 'physical' than waht I anticipated ... and what my Thai massage therapist managed to do with my body, surprised even me!
I love the feeling that one gets when you have stretched your body in a comfortable, non-jarring manner & I have to admit that I haven't felt this supple in ages. Another 'fabulous first' to add to my list of Spa experiences.
A light lunch was served & although I didn't use the facility I believe The Spa on Fairway can provide accommodation if necessary, having struck a deal with the lovely Fairway Guest House a few metres down the road.
Half Day, Full Day and individual treatments are available, with the full range of treatments from the traditional wraps, massages & reflexology to facials, manicures, pedicures and the like. Although lunches & healthy breakfasts are currently available, a small coffee shop / health bar are soon to be added to the existing facility.
A trip to a spa provides the opportunity to chill out, detox, rejuvenate and nurture oneself. I encourage you to add 'Try something new & different' to your list and to use these rare moments of peace and solitude as a chance to experience the benefits of other forms of therapy.
'The Spa' on Fairway is well worth a visit, more info it can be found at
