Review by Lisa Witepski
Out of all the reasons for visiting a spa – to unwind, rejuvenate or enjoy a pampering – probably the most compelling is to get away from it all. The Classique Spa, in Norwood, is just the place to escape to.
With its exquisite décor, this spa is the ultimate in decadence. Sumptuous and lavish are perhaps the best words to describe this magnificent tribute to the baroque era; a romantic mood that has been created with gorgeous fittings and ornate touches – think gilded mirrors and a blend of colours and textures that create a tactile and sensory wonderland. The result is pure escapism – you would never imagine that the spa is on the doorstep of Norwood's buzzing café society. Indeed, The Classique Spa is about as far from a typical, clinical spa setting as you can get – it really is a place made for indulgence.
That's precisely the mood that owners Saul Sostak and Caron Richards have tried to create. Saul explains that it's all about making people feel comfortable – and, because everyone has a different idea of what comfort is, the spa has to be pretty flexible. Suffice to say its rich appearance and accent on luxury – we're talking gloriously comfortable spa gowns and thick, padded slippers – will undoubtedly satisfy the hedonists among us, while Saul's very careful eye to hygiene makes sure that those with a more practical outlook are also catered for.
The enormous appeal of The Classique Spa probably comes from Saul's long involvement with the spa industry - as the importer of Sea of Life products, he's worked with a significant number of South Africa’s therapists and has formed a good idea of what works and what doesn’t.
Unsurprisingly, he's chosen to use Sea of Life products throughout the spa, a range with an especially high mineral content (from the Dead Sea), which is extremely effective for treating skin conditions. You'll also find Matis – chosen especially because it includes a good men’s range – as well as South African bestseller, Environ and, for manis and pedis, OPI.
The Classique Spa isn't just pretty, though. Treatment-wise, it has a lot to offer, including a flotation tank (unique because it is filled with water from the Dead Sea), as well as a Rasul Chamber and sauna. It also has a rather holistic approach to pampering, as every room is equipped with light therapy and crystals to channel energy. Plus, the extensive spa menu offers a range of flexible packages that can be tailored to meet your unique requirements.
This spa is a must – particularly in if you're in the need of a special spoil. Better yet, take your partner - the frills and femininity that make most men fear spas are notably absent, leaving you both to be beguiled by The Classique Spa's air of timeless romance.
