What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy - or water therapy - uses water to stimulate the body's own healing powers. Different treatments involve varying uses of water - hot, cold, ice, and steam.
Hydrotherapy treatments include using water temperature, water motion, water content, and the internal uses of water.
Such treatments improve sleep, digestion, bowel function, and increase energy levels. They are also used to reduce stress and pain.
Hot water (including steam) has the effect of relaxing muscles and causes sweating. It is used to treat arthritis, rheumatism, poor circulation, and sore muscles.
Cold water and ice are used in the treatment of sprains and headaches. Some hydrotherapy treatments involve the use of both hot water or steam and cold water or ice.
Sitz baths
A Sitz bath involves a type of tub or bath that enables the lower abdomen to be immersed in water of a different temperature from that around the feet. The Sitz baths are recommended for haemorrhoids, prostate swelling, menstrual cramps, and other genito-urinary problems.
Purifying baths
Some hydrotherapy treatments involve bathing in solutions of solutions of sea salt, lemon juice, turmeric, Epsom salts, baking soda, or other substances in order to purify the body.
Bubble, jet and whirlpool water therapy treatments
Motion-based hydrotherapy uses water under pressure - in the form of jets, whirlpools, or bubbles to massage the body. It is used to treat injuries, anxiety and stress.
Internal hydrotherapy
Internal hydrotherapy includes colonic irrigations and enemas, the inhalation of steam, and the drinking of mineral waters to cleanse the system.
